The honeymoon period of intuitive eating is a very normal phase to experience when making peace with food. Let’s dive into what it is and why it’s important to go through.
What is the honeymoon period?
When you decide to give yourself permission to eat all foods, its very normal to go through a ‘honeymoon period’. You’ll very likely eat a larger quantity of the foods you previously restricted.
Let me give you an analogy
Say you’ve got a straw in your mouth, breathing through it without the help of your nose. Now, walk around the house. Your heart rate will increase. Breathing will become a bit harder.
Now, remove the straw and try to breathe normally. For a few seconds there, you’ll need deep breaths to re-oxygenate. After a few breaths, however, you can breathe normally again.
The same thing happens when you stop restricting food. When you remove restriction (aka the straw), you may eat a little more than usual (aka breathe a little deeper), but after some time, your eating (aka breathing) will normalise.
How long does the honeymoon period last?
This is different for everyone. For some people, it may take a while for our bodies to adapt and trust.
Try not to judge how long it will take you. Remember, trust the process.
